1 〔芳香を〕 give [let] off [out] 《a smell》; emit; exude; smell 《of…》; 〔悪臭を〕 stink 《of…》; reek 《of…》.

●たばこ臭をにおわす reek of tobacco; exude a smell of tobacco.

●彼女はいつも香水をほのかににおわせている. There is always a faint aroma of perfume about her.

・彼は今日整髪料をぷんぷんにおわせている. Today he's letting out a strong smell of hair gel.

・草花があたりの空気を甘くにおわせている. The flowers add their sweet scent to the air around.

・彼女はライラックの香をにおわせながら部屋に入ってきた. She came into the room giving off an odor of lilac.

2 〔ほのめかす〕 hint 《at…》; allude 《to…》; suggest; insinuate; drop a hint 《of…》; give an inkling 《of…》.

●彼は現役引退をにおわせた. He hinted at retiring from active play.

・彼女は別の犯行もにおわせている. She is dropping hints of being involved in another crime.

・今日ははっきりとは言わずにおわすにとどめておこう. Today I will not make a definite statement, but leave it (as a vague hint) in the air.

・彼に転勤が近いことをにおわせておいた. I hinted [dropped a (broad) hint] that he might be transferred soon.

・証拠をつかんでいることをにおわせるだけの方が効き目があるだろう. It may be more effective just to suggest that proof has been found.
